★ Reading Round Up #5 ★

2 March 2020

Already I feel like that 2020 is the year I will read more books. Since starting university back in 2016, my annual reading capacity has definitely flopped. I have really been struggling to get my reading mojo back which is driving me crazy! I go through phases of reading loads and then not reading at all but so far this year I feel I have done far better which I am happy about!

My goal this year is to read 25 books and so far I have read 6. If I keep reading as much as I am, I will definitely succeed my goal this year which I will be very thrilled about! Anyway, let me discuss that I have read so far this year...

WHAT I READ IN JANUARY

1. Heartstopper (Volume 1) - Alice Oseman ♥♥♥♥♥/5
I had seen this book floating around on the internet; everyone reviewing it, raving about and overall loving it. So when I visited Daunt Books on a lunch break I picked it up! I am so glad I picked it up as it was so enjoyable! It follows two boys who slowly fall for each other and it really is adorable. To be honest there's not too much to the plot but I love how simple and real it is. You can just imagin this story being a real life story which I just adore! The book ended on such a painful cliffhanger so you can just imagine how quick I was to order the second volume!

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance.

2. Paper Girls (Volume 1) - Brian K. Vaughman ♥♥♥♥/5
I picked this up not knowing too much about it but I was just craving a graphic novel to read (I feel 2020 is the year for graphic novels for me) and I have heard great things about Vaughman's work. This graphic novel follows a group of Paper Girls who stumble accross some crazy 'beings' during the early morning after Halloween. This volume did not dissapoint! It grabbed me in from the start, making me want more every time I turned a page. I love all of the characters and look forward to seeing where their adventure leads them in volume 2.

The only downside to book I would say is that it leaves you with a lot of questions but I'm hoping they will be answered in the second volume.

3. The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials Book 2) - Philip Pullman ♥♥♥/5
I'm not too sure where to start with this book! This book follows on from the events that happened in book 1, introducing new worlds and story lines too.  I absolutely loved Northern Lights and I'll be honest with you this one just wasn't as good. It is good and I am still enjoying the series, I think it just surprised me on the direction it took in this book. It has left me with a lot of questions but I am hoping the third and final book will provide those answers for me! I was also not a fan of Lyra's character in this book. Her character seemed very different to how she was in the first but then she has been through a lot so I can understand why she would act they way that she does.

This book hasn't stopped me from wanting to finish the series, I just hope book 3 is a little better and more like the first!

WHAT I READ IN FEBRUARY

4. Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles Book 1) - Marissa Meyer ♥♥♥♥/5
I have been wanting to reread this series for ages so I am so glad that I finally decided to pick up Cinder in Febraury! I thorougly enjoyed revisiting the story and being introduced to the characters again! I love Cinder as a character and it's so painful to see how badly treated she is just because she is a cyborg! I didn't full in love with it as much as I did the first time I read it but I still enjoyed it and I can't wait to read Scarlett (the second book in the series). This book is perfect if you love fairytale retellings! It has such an interesting twist to the normal Cinderella story.

5. Little Women (Little Women Book/Part 1) - Louisa May Alcott ♥♥♥♥♥/5
I am so glad I decided to pick this book up. After seeing the new film adaptation in December (seeing it a total of 3 times in the cinema) I just fell in love with the story and the March family! The book is even better than the film and provides you even more details of the March sister's adventures. My edition is part one to the two part story. Part 1 following the March sisters when they are little and the challenges childhood brings. I recognised lots of the stories within the book which are portrayed in the film but there were a few more moments in the book that allowed me to grow fonder and closer to the girls! Trying to describe Little Women is a little difficult but it's basically just following the sisters as they grow older.

I can't wait to read Good Wives, which is the second part of the story. Following the girls as they have reached adulthood.

6. Heartstopper (Volume 2) - Alice Oseman  ♥♥♥♥♥/5
Just like the first volume this is duch an adorably good read! I flew through it, reading it in one sitting and I am already craving the third volume. This volume follows straight after the events volume 1 finished with, diving you straight back into the story which I appreciated. I can't say too much without giving away spoilers but trust me when I say, it is just as good as the first.
WHAT I WANT TO READ IN MARCH

Song of The Dark Crystal (Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal Book 2) - J.M. Lee
If you follow me on Instagram or on Twitter then you will know how much I love The Dark Crystal. It has become a show that means so much to me and I have lost count how many times I have watched it. I read the first book to this series last year and adored it so I am desperate to continue the series!

The Amber Spy Glass (His Dark Materials Book 3) - Philip Pullman
I really want to finish this series. I have so far really enjoyed it even though the second one definietly left me feeling a little confused. I am hoping to get to this book in this month so that I can complete the trilogy.

So as you can see from this post, I have had a pretty successful two months in my opinion! I am hoping that my reading mojo will only get better from now on and I have so many other books I want to read and complete this year! Try and shift the amount on books on my TBR to the read pile! I am also hoping to start reviewing books on my blog again as I did really enjoy that. I want to improve my reviewing skills and share with you a little more.

I hope you enjoyed this post and don't miss next weeks post! If you would like to see more from me on a daily basis, please follow me on Twitter and Instagram where I post daily. I also upload vlogs every Thursday evening.

What have you read this year? Anything you would recommend me reading?

  3. I'm with you on The Subtle Knife. The Amber Spyglass is much better, but still not as good as Northern Lights in my opinion. It's a good ending to the series though. I really need to read Little Women too. Everyone I know who has read it loves it.
